Berlin: Symphony of a Great City

1927
Directed by Walter Ruttmann

Cast

Documentary; no actors a day in the life of Berlin

Plot

Without a plot or actors, Walter Ruttmann's 1927 film follows a single day in Berlin, from the arrival of a train at dawn through the factories, shops, offices, restaurants and entertainments of the city, to a night of dancing and theatre. It is built like a musical composition in five acts, with rhythmic editing that matches movement across scenes. The film is the best known of the city symphonies of the 1920s, and its portrait of a modern, busy and mechanised metropolis has been both admired and criticised.

Sinekatalog’s take

Walter Ruttmann's 1927 film follows a single day in Berlin, from dawn train to night revels, edited with rhythmic rapture. Bold and dazzling, it is a landmark of city symphonies and avant-garde montage.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
