Plot
In sixteenth-century Spain, Lázaro, a poor boy, is handed over as a guide to a blind beggar and learns to survive by his wits. He passes from one master to another, including a greedy priest and a penniless squire, and sees the hypocrisy and hunger around him. César Fernández Ardavín's 1959 film, adapted from the anonymous picaresque classic, is a lively and satirical portrait of the period and won the Golden Bear in Berlin.
Sinekatalog’s take
César Fernández Ardavín's film adapts the sixteenth-century picaresque novel about a poor boy who survives by wit under a series of masters. Colourful and lively, it is a faithful, if conventional, version of a Spanish classic.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
