A free adaptation of Goethe, in which a restless doctor sells his soul to a pawnbroker devil for the love of a young woman.
Sinekatalog’s take
Alexander Sokurov's free adaptation of Goethe follows a restless doctor and a pawnbroker-devil in a murky, warped world. Rich, strange and densely painterly, it won the Golden Lion and is a demanding, hallucinatory feast.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
