Alexander Sokurov

Slow and Contemplative Cinema

Born in 1951 in a village in Siberia, Alexander Sokurov studied at VGIK in Moscow, and his early films were banned or shelved by the Soviet authorities. Andrei Tarkovsky championed him. His films are slow, painterly and meditative, often with distorted images, and deal with history, power and death. Russian Ark (2002), a ninety-six-minute journey through the Hermitage Museum in a single unbroken shot, made him known worldwide. His tetralogy on power includes Moloch, Taurus and The Sun, and Faust (2011) won the Golden Lion at Venice.
