Plot
In sixteenth-century Japan, during a period of civil war, a potter, Genjuro, and his brother-in-law Tobei leave their wives in a village to chase wealth and glory. Genjuro is seduced by a beautiful noblewoman who turns out to be a ghost, while Tobei buys armour and fights for a fame he does not earn. Their wives suffer in their absence. Kenji Mizoguchi's 1953 film, adapted from stories by Ueda Akinari, blends the ghost story with a human tragedy, and its misty, flowing images won the Silver Lion in Venice.
Sinekatalog’s take
Mizoguchi's ghost story follows two men whose ambition wrecks their families in civil-war Japan. Elegant and eerie, with long, fluid takes, it is a classic of Japanese cinema.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
