Plot

Retired San Francisco detective John "Scottie" Ferguson, who suffers from a fear of heights, is hired by an old friend to follow his wife, Madeleine, who seems to be possessed by a dead ancestor. He falls in love with her, and after she appears to fall to her death from a mission tower, he is haunted by the loss. When he meets a woman who resembles her, he attempts to remake her in Madeleine's image. Alfred Hitchcock's 1958 film, with James Stewart and Kim Novak, was a commercial disappointment at first and is now ranked among the greatest films ever made.

Sinekatalog’s take

Hitchcock's obsessive romance has a retired detective remake a woman in the image of his lost love. Dreamlike and unsettling, it is a study of control that rewards repeated viewings.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
