Ermanno Olmi

Italian Neorealism and After

Born in Bergamo in 1931 and died in 2018, Ermanno Olmi worked for a company producing industrial documentaries before turning to fiction. His quiet, humane films often use non-professional actors, and are influenced by neorealism and Catholic faith. Il posto (1961) is a gentle portrait of a young man's first office job, and The Tree of Wooden Clogs (1978), which won the Palme d'Or, shows the life of four peasant families in Lombardy at the end of the nineteenth century. He later made The Legend of the Holy Drinker and The Profession of Arms.
