F.W. Murnau

German Expressionism

Born in Bielefeld in 1888, Murnau was a leading figure of German Expressionism who fascinated critics with his fluid, moving camera. After Nosferatu and The Last Laugh he moved to Hollywood, where Sunrise won an award at the first Academy Awards ceremony. He died in a car accident in California in 1931, just before Tabu opened.
