Plot

A Ukrainian village is split over collectivisation when the first tractor arrives. The young farmer Vasyl, a supporter of the new methods, is murdered by the son of a wealthy landowner after dancing home through the night. The funeral is a gathering of the whole community, with a priest and a defiant poem for the dead. Alexander Dovzhenko's 1930 silent film is famous for its lyrical images of wheat fields, apple orchards and rain, which treat the cycle of life and death as one great movement of nature.

Sinekatalog’s take

Alexander Dovzhenko's silent Soviet classic celebrates and mourns a Ukrainian village in the clash over collectivisation. Lyrical images of wheat, apples and tractors make it a visual poem to life, death and the land.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
