Born in Ukraine in 1894 and died in 1956, Dovzhenko was one of the most important early Soviet filmmakers alongside Eisenstein, Vertov and Pudovkin. His lyrical, poetic silent films drew on Ukrainian folk culture, and he influenced later directors such as Larisa Shepitko, Sergei Parajanov and Andrei Tarkovsky.
