Egypt
Egypt was the Arab world's Hollywood, with Cairo studios producing musicals, melodramas and comedies from the 1930s that were watched from Morocco to Iraq. Youssef Chahine brought a personal, political art cinema from the 1950s, and Shadi Abdel Salam's The Mummy became a landmark of Arab film. Today independent filmmakers work around a crowded commercial industry and tight controls.
