Born in Porto in 1908 and dying there in 2015 at the age of 106, Manoel de Oliveira began making films in 1927 and shot the city symphony Douro, Faina Fluvial in 1931 and the feature Aniki-Bóbó in 1942. His career took off only after Rite of Spring (1963); from the 1970s he made films steadily, about one a year even after he turned a hundred. His films are slow, theatrical and literary, with long takes and adaptations of novels and plays, and often return to Portugal's history, religion and desire. His last feature was Gebo and the Shadow (2012).
