Philippine cinema has a long commercial history of melodrama and action, and a rich independent strand. The 1970s and 80s brought Lino Brocka's social-realist work, and since the 2000s Lav Diaz, with his many-hour films, and Brillante Mendoza, with his raw handheld style, have made Filipino film a regular presence at major festivals.
